DVLA Driver View API integration for automated driver checks

If your business puts drivers on the road, checking their licences is not optional. Doing it by hand is slow, easy to forget and hard to prove. A check that happened three months ago tells you nothing about today.

For a bespoke ERP we built, we implemented the DVLA Driver View API so driver licence checks happen automatically, and the right people are alerted when something needs attention.

The challenge

Fleet operators need to know who is legally able to drive, and keep records that stand up to scrutiny. That means regular DVLA driver licence checks, along with Driver CPC and tachograph information, across every driver. Doing that through manual lookups costs hours, and it is only ever as current as the last time someone remembered.

What we built

We worked directly with the DVLA through the onboarding process and then adopted the entire Driver View API inside the ERP. From a driver's licence number, the system now:

• Runs automated driver checks against DVLA data, on demand and on a schedule.
• Returns licence status and entitlements, so you know which vehicle categories each driver can drive.
• Surfaces endorsements and penalty points as soon as they appear on a record.
• Brings in Driver CPC and tachograph information alongside the licence check.
• Stores a dated record of every check, giving you an audit trail.

Risk management and alerts

Raw licence data is only useful if someone acts on it. We built a risk management layer on top, with rules that turn each result into a clear rating for every driver. Endorsements and other licence issues trigger alerts, so managers hear about a problem straight away and can decide what to do next. Drivers who are clear stay out of the way, and the team's attention goes to the ones who need it.

The result

Driver checks that used to depend on someone remembering now run on their own. The business has an up to date view of licence status across its drivers, a record of every check for compliance purposes, and early warning when a licence changes.
